About this game

Write the number that comes just after a given number, up to 20. Just for practice, with no grade.

The number sequence up to 20: find the next number

Knowing the number sequence up to 20 means knowing which number comes after another. In the first year of primary school, the child has to say it without starting again from one. Indeed, the next number is always one more. This idea prepares addition and mental math.

The game shows a number between 1 and 19. The child types the number that comes just after. The game reads the instruction out loud. A game has 8 questions, with a progress bar. It is free practice, with no grade and nothing at stake.

The hint suggests a simple method: say the written number, then count one more. This way, after 15, the child says “sixteen”. In the car or at the table, play “the next number”. For example, say “twelve” and let your child answer “thirteen”. Then swap roles.

This game is for children aged 6 to 7, in the first year of primary school. It strengthens the number sequence up to 20, especially the tricky stretch from eleven to sixteen. It is free online, on computer, tablet and phone.

Tip for the number sequence up to 20

Look at the written number. First, say it out loud. Then count one more. For example, you read fifteen, you say: fifteen… sixteen! The next number is always one more. You can hold up one finger for that “one more”. Finally, type that number with the keys.
