The number line from 1 to 20: write the numbers from 11 to 19

The number line from 1 to 20 is a key tool in the first year of primary school. It shows that each number is one more than the one before. The numbers from 11 to 19 form the second ten. Yet their names, like eleven or fifteen, are hard to remember. That is why this game practises them on their own.

The child sees a number line from 11 to 19 with empty boxes. They write the missing numbers. Then they read the whole line out loud. From one question to the next, the line gets emptier, up to 8 gaps. A line that is partly right earns partial points. A game has 8 questions.

At home, make a paper number line from 1 to 20. Then hide a few numbers with clothes pegs or stickers. For example, your child finds the hidden number, then checks by lifting the sticker. In the classroom, the number line from 1 to 20 on the wall plays the same role.

This review game is for children aged 6 to 7, in the first year of primary school. It secures writing and reading the numbers up to twenty. It works on computer, tablet and phone.

Tip for completing the number line from 1 to 20

Each number is one more than the one before. First, put your finger on the first number. Then move along box by box as you count: eleven, twelve, thirteen… When a box is empty, write the number you say. Finally, read the whole line out loud, from eleven to nineteen.
