About this game

Pictures to touch to recognize the quantity one: dots, ladybugs, fingers and apples.

Recognize the number 1 in preschool: one object on its own

Recognizing the number 1 seems obvious to an adult. Yet it is the very first step towards number. The child discovers that one means a single object, whatever its shape. So an apple, a dot or a ladybug all carry the same quantity. This idea also prepares the instant recognition of small quantities, without needing to count.

A game has five questions. First, a voice reads the instruction: “Choose the picture that shows 1.” Then the child chooses a picture: dots, ladybugs, fingers or apples. If they hesitate, a hint invites them to hold up one finger, then to look for the picture that has that many. A progress bar shows how far they have come.

Before playing, put a single object on the table and say “one” as you point to it. Then hold up one finger together. After the game, look for things that come one at a time around you: a nose, a mouth, the sun. This way, the child learns to recognize the number 1 in everyday life.

The game is for preschoolers aged 3 to 5. It is free to play online, on computer, tablet or phone.

Tip for recognizing the number 1

Hold up one finger, just one. Look at it carefully: that’s one. Then look at each picture. Do you see just one apple? Then that’s one! Do you see two ladybugs? Then that’s not one. Next, choose the picture that has just one object, like your raised finger. Listen carefully to the voice: it tells you what to look for.
