Add 2 numbers, up to 5: calculating without drawings

In the first year of primary school, the child moves little by little from objects to written calculations. Adding 2 numbers, up to 5, without drawings shows this progress. They no longer count pictures: they calculate in their head or on their fingers. That is why these small sums are the basis of mental math.

The game shows an addition, like 3 + 2 or 4 + 0. Then the child types the answer. The sum never goes over 5. There is only one try per question. Then the right answer appears straight away. The game reads the instruction out loud. A game has 8 questions.

The hint gives an effective strategy: start from the first number and count on as many as the second. It also reminds the child that adding 0 changes nothing. At home, play with two dot dice. For example, your child keeps the first die in their head, then counts the dots on the second.

This game is for children aged 6 to 7, in the first year of primary school. This way, adding 2 numbers, up to 5, becomes quick and sure. It is free on computer, tablet and phone.

Tip for adding 2 numbers, up to 5

Don’t count from one! First, keep the first number in your head. Then hold up as many fingers as the second number. Count them as you carry on: three… four, five! If you add zero, nothing changes: three plus zero is three. Finally, type the answer with the keys.
