Add two numbers up to 10: written calculation in the first year of primary school

Being able to add two numbers up to 10 is a major goal of the first year of primary school. These small sums are then used everywhere: for big numbers, money or word problems. Here, no picture helps the child. So they have to rely on a calculation strategy.

The game shows an addition, such as 6 + 3, and reads the instruction aloud. The child writes the sum in digits. It never goes over 10. They have a single try per question. Then the game shows the right answer straight away. A round has 8 questions.

The hint suggests starting from the first number, then counting on with the fingers as many times as the second. For example, for 6 + 3, the child says “six”, then “seven, eight, nine”. At home, practice with a board game track. Indeed, moving a counter 3 spaces means adding 3.

This game is for the first year of primary school, for children aged 6 to 7. This way, these small sums slowly become a reflex. It is free on a computer, tablet or phone.

Tip for working out an addition up to 10

Don’t start from one! First, say the first number out loud: six. Then count on with your fingers as many times as the second number: seven, eight, nine. Stop when all the fingers are counted. Finally, write the number you got to. You held up three fingers and got to nine: you did it.
