The assessment: short stories to read, where you add two numbers, up to 10. The full result appears at the end.
In the first year of primary school, the child starts to read short word problems on their own. Addition word problems up to 10 ask them to read a story, then turn it into a calculation. It is a key step: the calculation finally takes on a concrete meaning. What’s more, the child learns to put together two amounts described in words.
This game is the assessment for the family of additions up to 10. The stories stay short, suited to a beginning reader. The child chooses the right number among the answers offered. Sometimes, one amount is zero. The game gives no help during the round. Finally, the full result appears at the end.
The hint suggests a method: find the two numbers in the story, start from the first, then count on the second with the fingers. At home, make up stories with your child’s toys. For example: “Six cars in the garage, four more arrive. How many in all?” Then let them write the calculation.
This assessment is for the first year of primary school, for children aged 6 to 7. This way, addition word problems up to 10 show whether the child links the text and the calculation.
Read the story slowly. First, look for the two numbers hidden in it. Then keep the first number in your head. Next, count on the second one with your fingers. For example: six… seven, eight, nine, ten! Finally, choose the number you got to. If a number is zero, you add nothing.
