Balloons for the babies, apples for the caterpillars: are there enough for everyone? Answer yes or no.
Before knowing how to count far, a child can already compare two groups. They just have to make pairs: one balloon for one baby, one apple for one caterpillar. This is one-to-one matching, a key idea for children aged 4 to 6. This way, it gives meaning to the words “as many”, “some are missing” and “some are left over”.
First, a picture shows objects and characters. The voice asks: are there enough for everyone? The child chooses Yes or No, in a single try. Then the game shows the right answer straight away and explains it. A round has five questions.
At home, the dinner table is the perfect place to practice. For example, ask: “Will each plate get its fork?” Then your child puts a fork next to each plate and sees right away whether some are missing.
This game suits children aged 4 to 6, in preschool. What’s more, it prepares comparing amounts by number, seen later. It is free on a computer, tablet or phone.
Put your finger on an object. Then slide it to a person. That’s a pair! Do it again, one by one, without forgetting anyone. At the end, look carefully. If someone is left with nothing, some are missing: choose No. If everyone has their own, choose Yes. You can also do it at the table, with the glasses and the plates!
