Complete the additions up to 10: reviewing number bonds

Being able to complete the additions up to 10 means knowing numbers from the inside. For example, 9 is 4 + 5, but also 6 + 3 or 8 + 1. These number bonds are used in mental math and prepare subtraction. In the first year of primary school, they are reviewed often so they stick.

This review game offers missing-number additions. The answer never goes over 10, but it changes from one question to the next. One of the two numbers is missing, and the child types it. The game reads the instruction aloud. A round has 8 questions, with a progress bar.

The hint advises starting from the number you know, then counting on your fingers up to the answer. This way, the fingers you hold up give the answer. At home, play “mystery box”. First, announce a total, for example eight counters. Then show five of them: how many are hidden in the box?

This game is for the first year of primary school, for children aged 6 to 7. Finally, completing the additions up to 10 brings back the number bonds seen before. It is free on a computer, tablet or phone.

Tip for completing the additions up to 10

First, look at the answer after the = sign. That is your goal. Then start from the number you know. Count on your fingers up to the answer. For example, from four to nine: five, six, seven, eight, nine. You held up five fingers. The fingers you hold up are the answer! Write it in the empty box.
