Review additions up to 5 by writing the missing number: 2 + ? = 4, ? + 1 = 3…
A missing number addition changes the usual question. We know the answer, but one of the two numbers is missing. For example, 2 + ? = 4 asks: how many do you need to add to 2 to get 4? In the first year of primary school, completing the additions, up to 5, prepares subtraction. The child also reasons instead of following a recipe.
In this review game, the missing number changes place. It is sometimes before the + sign, sometimes after it. The answer never goes over 5. The child types the missing number. The game reads the instruction out loud. A game has 8 questions.
The hint invites the child to look first at the answer, after the = sign. Then the child counts on their fingers from the written number. At home, hide counters under a cup. For example, show two of them, announce “four in all”, then ask how many are hidden.
This game is for children aged 6 to 7, in the first year of primary school. Completing the additions, up to 5, secures the number bonds of small numbers. It is free on computer, tablet and phone.
First, look at the number after the = sign: that is where you need to get to. Then start from the number written in the addition. Hold up a finger each time you move on. When you reach the answer, stop. The fingers you are holding up are the missing number! Write it in the empty box.
