About this game

Count up to 10 shapes placed in a ten frame, then touch the right number. The right answer appears after each question.

Count from 1 to 10 with a ten frame: two rows of five

The ten frame arranges objects in two rows of five. To count from 1 to 10, it gives a solid landmark. A full row is worth five. So seven shapes read as “a full row and two”. A child in the last year of preschool learns to use an organised group instead of counting everything again.

A game has five questions. First, a voice reads the instruction. Then the child counts the shapes placed in the grid and chooses the right number. There is only one try. Straight afterwards, the game shows the right answer. The empty boxes also remind them how many are missing to reach ten.

To go further, draw a ten frame on a sheet of paper, or use an egg box with ten holes. For example, put in six counters and ask how many there are. Then ask how many boxes are still empty. This activity helps to count from 1 to 10 with a ten frame and prepares for the number bonds to ten.

This game is for children aged 5 to 6, in the last year of preschool. It is free on computer, tablet and phone.

Tip for counting fast in the grid

First look at the rows of the grid. A full row is five! So say “five” all at once. Then touch the other shapes, only once each: six, seven… Be careful: the empty boxes don’t count. Two full rows? Then that makes ten! Finally, choose the right number.
