Count up to 20 shapes set out in ten frames, then write the number. The right answer appears after each question.
To count from 1 to 20, a child in the first year of primary school does well to lean on ten. A full ten frame is worth 10, without counting everything again. Then all that is left is to add the extra ones. This way, the child understands that 14 is ten and four more. This idea carries all of place value in the early grades.
In this game, shapes fill ten frames. The child counts them, then writes the number in digits. There is only one try per question. Then the game shows the right answer straight away. A game has 8 questions, with a progress bar. The game also reads each instruction out loud.
The hint recalls two useful rules. First, a full frame is 10: start from ten. Then, the empty boxes don’t count. At home, draw a ten frame on a sheet of paper. For example, put counters in it, then add a few more beside it.
This game is for children aged 6 to 7, in the first year of primary school. It helps them count from 1 to 20 faster and with fewer mistakes. It is free on computer, tablet and phone.
Look carefully at the frame. If all the boxes are full, that makes ten. You don’t need to count them! Then start from ten and count the extra shapes: eleven, twelve, thirteen… Be careful: the empty boxes don’t count. Finally, type the number you found with the keys.
