Count up to 5 shapes placed in a ten frame. The right answer appears after each question.
The ten frame is a tool children will keep using until first grade. It arranges objects in two rows of five. So a full row shows five straight away. Counting to 5 in a ten frame helps the child see half of ten, and prepares the calculation of the years ahead.
Each round has five questions, read aloud. In the grid, shapes fill some boxes, and other boxes stay empty. The child counts the shapes, then chooses the right number. The hint recalls a key point: empty boxes don’t count. They have a single try. Then the right answer appears straight away.
To go further, make a grid from a ten-egg carton. Then put four or five marbles in it. For example, ask: “How many marbles? How many empty holes?” Finally, have your child count to 5 in this ten frame, then fill a whole row.
This game suits preschoolers aged 4 to 6. It is free online, on a computer, tablet or phone.
In the grid, some boxes are empty. Don’t count them! Put your finger only on the shapes, once each. Say: one, two, three… A completely full row? Then that’s five at once! Next, choose the right number. Finally, look at the answer that appears: it helps you for the next one.
