Two rows in a grid: you know the top number, you count what sticks out at the bottom and write the number. For practice.
Counting on means starting from a number you already know and carrying on counting. For example, the child knows there are six objects, then says “seven” for the next object. This strategy saves time. It also prepares for working out addition in the first year of primary school. Being able to count on to 10 is real progress in the last year of preschool.
Each game has five questions. First, a voice reads the instruction. The screen shows two rows in a grid. The number for the top row appears in a badge. Then the child starts from that number and counts what sticks out at the bottom. Finally, they write the number for the bottom row.
At home, hide a few counters under a cup and say how many there are. Then put two counters beside it. Ask how many there are altogether, without lifting the cup. This way, the child learns to count on to 10 from a quantity they cannot see.
This practice game is for children aged 5 to 6, in the last year of preschool. It is free on computer, tablet and phone.
Don’t count them all again! First, look at the number written in the top badge. Keep it in your head. Then look at the bottom row for what sticks out. Touch it and carry on counting from the top number. For example: six… seven! Finally, write the last number you say.
