Start from the number of the top row, count what sticks out at the bottom, then write the number. Just for practice, with no grade.
Counting on means starting from a number you already know and continuing to count. For example, we know there are three objects; we add one and say “four”, without starting again from one. This gesture leads straight to addition. Counting on up to 5 in the last year of preschool lets children practice it with small quantities.
The screen shows two rows of objects. The number of the top row is written beside it. At the bottom, a few objects stick out. The child starts from the top number, then counts what sticks out. Next, they write the number on the keyboard, in digits. The round has five questions, with no grade: it is practice.
Before playing, put down two rows of tokens, one under the other. Then hide the top row under a sheet of paper, saying how many it has. This way, the child cannot count again and has to carry on. Also practice counting on up to 5 with fingers: “I have three, I raise one more: four!”
The game is for the last year of preschool, around ages 5 and 6. It is free online, on a computer, tablet or phone.
Look at the number written at the top. Keep it in your head. Don’t count everything again! Then look at the bottom at the objects that stick out. Touch them and keep counting from the top number. For example, you have three in your head: four! Next, write the last number you said. Finally, check with your fingers.
