Two groups of dots to compare: choose the one that has fewer.
Looking for the group that has fewer seems easy. Yet many children first touch the bigger group, out of habit. Indeed, the word “fewer” comes later in language than the word “more”. This game works on it for its own sake, for children aged 4 to 6.
The round uses the dot cards from the game about “more”, but the question changes. The child chooses the group that has fewer dots. Then a sentence explains the choice, for example: “Two is less than three.” Five questions make a round, and a voice reads each instruction.
To decide, the child can count each group: the smaller number shows the smaller amount. Otherwise, they match the dots one by one. The group that runs out first has fewer. This is one-to-one comparison.
After the game, put out two plates of grapes and ask: “Where are there fewer?” Then take one grape away and ask the question again. This way, the child sees that a group changes when you take an object away. The game is free on a computer, tablet or phone.
Listen carefully: the voice says “fewer”. So you are looking for the small group. Touch each dot, only once, and say the numbers. Then do the same with the other group. The smaller number has fewer dots. You can also match the dots two by two with your finger. The one that finishes first has fewer. Finally, choose it!
