About this game

Review the lesson “A war of annihilation” from the French history curriculum for 3e (ages 14–15). Its questions are about the Second World War, a war of annihilation: an unexpected agreement between two dictatorships on the eve of the conflict; the outbreak of war, then fighting that spreads to Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific; the war in Eastern Europe, where the fighting is fiercest; the major turning points of the war; the end of the fighting in Europe, then in Asia; and a war in which the enemy is to be destroyed, down to civilian populations.

Review the lesson “A war of annihilation”

This review game covers a single lesson of the French history curriculum for 3e: “A war of annihilation”, from the unit “Europe, a major theater of total wars (1914-1945).” Its questions are about the Second World War, a war of annihilation: an unexpected agreement between two dictatorships on the eve of the conflict; the outbreak of war, then fighting that spreads to Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific; the war in Eastern Europe, where the fighting is fiercest; the major turning points of the war; the end of the fighting in Europe, then in Asia; and a war in which the enemy is to be destroyed, down to civilian populations.

Each round has 10 questions drawn at random from the lesson: multiple choice, matching, short answers and timelines. After each answer, an explanation recalls what to remember. Hints are free, and you can go back.

The game follows the French national curriculum: 3e is the fourth and last year of middle school in France, for students aged 14 to 15. Elsewhere, it works as general knowledge for curious learners of that age. Play it again and you get other questions: it is good practice right after the lesson or before a test.

Tip for a successful review

To put the major stages of the war in order, ask yourself, for each one, what had to have happened already to make it possible. Careful: the war does not end everywhere at the same time; when it is over in Europe, it still goes on in Asia. And to describe a war, ask yourself what each side wants to do to the enemy, and to its civilians. If you get it wrong, read the explanation carefully: it tells you what to remember.
