About this game

Counting to 3 with the number line in view: the last number tells how many there are.

Learn to count to 3: the last word tells how many

Reciting “one, two, three” is not enough to count. The child must understand that the last word they say tells how many objects there are. This idea is called the cardinal principle. Learning to count to 3 lays this foundation, with quantities small enough to check at a glance.

In this game, the number line stays in front of the child. It shows 1, 2 and 3, with the dots of a dice and raised fingers. For each of the five questions, a voice says: “Count the objects, then choose the right number.” The hint recalls the gesture: touch each object only once, as you say one, two, three.

Before playing, line up three caps or three spoons. Then touch them one by one with your child. Next, ask: “How many are there?” If they count everything again, show them that the last word is enough. This way, learning to count to 3 makes sense in everyday gestures.

This game suits preschoolers aged 3 to 5. It is free online, on computer, tablet or phone.

Tip for learning to count to 3

Put your finger on each object, only once. At the same time, say: one, two, three. Don’t skip any! The last word you say is how many there are. For example, do you say “three”? Then there are three objects. Next, look at the number line. Finally, choose the number that goes with your last word.
