About this game

Counting to 5 with the number line in view: the last number tells how many there are.

Learn to count to 5 with the number line, the dice and fingers

Up to three, the eye is often enough. But with four and five, you really have to count. So learning to count to 5 means moving from a glance to a method. The child touches each object once, says a number with each gesture and remembers the last one. That is the cardinal principle: the last word tells how many.

Here, the number line stays in view. It shows 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 with the dots of a dice and raised fingers. This way, the child has three ways of seeing each number. For each of the five questions, a voice reads the instruction. The child counts the objects, then chooses the right number. The hint reminds them to touch each object only once.

Before playing, roll a real dice with your child. Then count the dots together, touching them. Next, hold up as many fingers. For example, with four caps, say: “one, two, three, four: four caps”. This way, learning to count to 5 becomes a shared game.

The game is for preschoolers aged 4 to 6. It is free online, on a computer, tablet or phone.

Tip for learning to count to 5

Put your finger on an object and say “one”. Then move on to the next one and say “two”. Keep going to the end, only once per object. The last word tells how many there are. Not sure? Look at the number line: the dots of the dice and the fingers help you. Finally, choose the number that goes with your last word.
