Make the number 4 with addition: all the ways to split it

In the first year of primary school, knowing the number bonds of a small number helps a lot in calculation. Four is 3 + 1, but also 2 + 2 or 4 + 0. This game is about making the number 4 with addition. This way, the child discovers that the same number can be written in several ways.

For each question, the game shows three additions. The child chooses the one that makes 4. The possible additions are 4 + 0, 3 + 1, 2 + 2, 1 + 3 and 0 + 4. The game reads the instruction out loud. A game has 8 questions, with a progress bar. It is free practice, with no grade.

The hint suggests using fingers: hold up fingers for the first number, then for the second, and count them all. At home, take four counters and two cups. Then look together for all the ways to share them out. For example, write 3 + 1 then 1 + 3: the order changes, not the total.

This game is for children aged 6 to 7, in the first year of primary school. Making the number 4 with addition prepares the missing parts that are useful for all mental math.

Tip for making the number 4 with addition

Look at the first addition. First, hold up fingers for the first number. Then hold up more fingers for the second number. Count all the fingers you are holding up. Do you find four? Then choose that addition! If not, try the next addition. For example, two fingers and two more fingers really do make four fingers.
