About this game

Additions drawn with objects: put the two groups together and write the answer, up to 4. Just for practice, with no grade.

Picture addition up to 4: putting two groups together

Before calculating with digits, a child in the first year of primary school has to understand what addition means. Adding means putting two groups together and counting them all. Picture addition up to 4 makes this action visible. Indeed, the child sees the objects before seeing the calculation.

Each question shows two boxes of objects and the written addition, for example 2 + 1. The child counts them all, then writes the answer. Sometimes a gray box stays empty: it is worth zero. The game reads the instruction out loud. A game has 8 questions. It is free practice, with no grade.

The hint advises counting the left box, then carrying on with the right box. This way, the child does not start again from one. At home, put out two plates with a few grapes. Then tip them together and have your child count them all. For example, leave one plate empty to talk about zero.

This game is for children aged 6 to 7, in the first year of primary school. Picture addition up to 4 prepares the calculations without drawings that come next. It is free on computer, tablet and phone.

Tip for picture addition up to 4

First, count the objects in the left box. Then don’t stop: carry on with the ones in the right box. The last number you say is the answer. A gray, empty box is zero: there is nothing to count. Finally, type the answer with the keys.
