About this game

A big picture of the schoolyard: count the balls, blocks, buildings, children, trees and slides.

Problem solving: numbers to 10 in the schoolyard

A problem-solving task puts the child in front of a real question: how many things are there in this yard? They have to use, on their own, what they know about numbers to 10. Nothing tells them where to start. This independence matters a lot at the end of the last year of preschool.

The game fits on a single screen. First, a voice reads the instruction. Then the child looks at a big picture of the yard: balls, blocks, buildings, children, trees and slides. Each kind has between 5 and 10 items. Then they write each number next to its picture. If some of the answers are right, they earn partial points.

To go further, suggest an everyday problem. For example, ask how many plates to set for a meal, then how many glasses. In this problem-solving situation, numbers to 10 meet a real need. Also ask your child to explain how they counted.

This review game suits children aged 5 to 6, in the last year of preschool. It is free on computer, tablet and phone.

Tip for counting in a big picture

The yard is full of things! First, count all the balls. Touch each one with your finger, only once. Then write the number next to the ball. Next, move on to the blocks, and so on. Count one kind at a time. If you are unsure, slowly count that kind again. Finally, read all your numbers again with a grown-up.
