About this game

Choose the picture of two grids that shows the written addition, with sums up to 10.

Recognize an addition in pictures: two grids up to 10

In the first year of primary school, the sentence 4 + 2 = 6 must bring a concrete picture to mind. Being able to recognize an addition in pictures shows that the child understands the + and = signs. Indeed, each number matches a group of objects. The answer describes the whole, put together.

The game shows an addition, with a sum up to 10, and reads it aloud. Several pictures appear, each with two grids. The left grid shows the first number, the right one the second. The child chooses the picture that goes with the addition. Sometimes, an empty grid is zero. A round has 8 questions.

Before playing, remind your child that adding means putting two groups together. For example, put four triangles on the left and two on the right. Then start from four and count “five, six”. Finally, show that adding zero changes nothing, and that 5 + 5 makes 10.

This game is for the first year of primary school, for children aged 6 to 7. This way, recognizing an addition in pictures prepares calculations without drawings. It works on a computer, tablet or phone.

Tip for recognizing an addition in pictures

Look at the written addition. The first number is the left grid. The second number is the right grid. First, count the objects on the left. Then count the ones on the right. An empty grid is zero. Finally, choose the picture where both numbers are right. If one grid doesn’t match, quickly look at the next picture.
