About this game

Pictures to touch to recognize the quantity three: dots, ladybugs, fingers and apples.

Recognize the number 3 at a glance, without counting again

Three marks a boundary. Up to three, a young child can see a quantity at a glance, without counting. Researchers call this gift subitizing. Beyond that, you have to count one by one. That is why recognizing the number 3 matters so much: it completes the series of very small quantities.

The game has five questions. A voice reads the instruction, then the child chooses the picture that shows three. They see dots, ladybugs, fingers or apples, sometimes arranged in different ways. This way, they learn that three stays three, even when the objects move. A hint suggests holding up their fingers to compare.

To go further, take out a dice and show the face with three dots. Then put three bottle caps in a line, then in a triangle. Ask: “Are there still three?” Finally, sing a counting rhyme such as “One, two, three, four, five, once I caught a fish alive”. These little games help to recognize the number 3 everywhere.

The game is for preschoolers aged 3 to 5. It is free online, on computer, tablet or phone.

Tip for seeing the number 3 at once

Look at the picture without counting straight away. Do you see three dots at once? Well done! If you are not sure, hold up three fingers: one, two, three. Then put one finger on each object. Is there an object left on its own? Then it’s not three. Does each object have its finger? Then you’ve found it! Finally, choose the right picture.
