About this game

Pictures to touch to recognize the quantity four: bats, fingers, apples, fish…

Recognize the number 4: when a glance is no longer enough

With four, the eye alone starts to hesitate. Three objects can be seen at once, but four often need grouping. Two and two, for example, make four. So recognizing the number 4 means learning to organize what you see. This step opens the family of numbers up to 5, for children aged 4 to 6.

Each round has five questions. A voice reads the instruction, then the child chooses the picture that shows four. The pictures vary a lot: dots, bats, fingers, beetles, apples, ladybugs, butterflies, calves, fish. What’s more, four often sits next to five. So the child has to look carefully not to mix them up.

At home, arrange four objects in a square, like the legs of a table. Then ask: “Can you see two and two?” Next, hold up four fingers and hide your thumb. These gestures help to recognize the number 4 without counting everything again.

The game suits preschoolers aged 4 to 6. It is free online, on a computer, tablet or phone.

Tip for seeing the number 4

Hold up four fingers and hide your thumb. That’s four! Then look at the pictures. Try to see two and two, like legs. If you are not sure, touch each object only once: one, two, three, four. Watch out, one picture has five! So count carefully. Finally, choose the picture that has as many objects as your fingers.
