Pictures to touch to recognize the quantity five: a whole hand, apples, ladybugs, fish…

Recognize the number 5: a whole hand, five raised fingers

Five is a whole hand. A child always carries this landmark with them. So recognizing the number 5 means relying on their fingers to check a quantity. Later, this hand will serve as a landmark for numbers up to 10: five and one more, five and two more.

The game comes right after the one about four. It uses the same pictures, such as apples, ladybugs or fish. This way, only the quantity changes, and the child compares four and five. For each of the five questions, a voice reads the instruction. Then the child chooses the picture that shows five. A hint invites them to hold up their fingers, then to look for the picture that has as many.

To go further, trace around their hand on a sheet of paper. Then put a bottle cap on each finger you drew. For example, ask: “How many caps? And if we take one away?” Finally, sing a five-finger rhyme together. These games help to recognize the number 5 at first sight.

The game is for preschoolers aged 4 to 6. It is free online, on a computer, tablet or phone.

Tip for finding the number 5

Open your whole hand. Can you see your five fingers? That’s five! Now look at a picture. Put a finger of your other hand on each object. Has every finger found an object, with none left over? Then it’s five! Is one finger left on its own? Then it’s four. Finally, choose the right picture.
