Linking the word, the number and the quantity: matching 1, 2 and 3 with the pictures that go with them.
Until now, the child said “one, two, three” and held up their fingers. Now they meet the written number. Representing numbers up to 3 means linking three things: the word they hear, the sign that is drawn and the quantity. At ages 4 to 5, this link is still fragile. So the number 3 means nothing until it is matched with three objects.
Each game has five questions, read aloud. Sometimes the child has to touch the number that is named. Other times, they look at a number, then choose the picture that has that many objects. A progress bar moves forward with each answer.
To help, describe the shape of each number with your child. For example, the 1 is a straight line with a little nose. The 2 looks like a swimming swan. The 3 has two round tummies. Then draw the numbers in sand or flour. Next, put the right number of erasers beside them. This way, representing numbers up to 3 becomes a hands-on game.
This game is for children aged 4 to 5, in preschool. It is free online, on computer, tablet or phone.
First, look carefully at the shape of the number. Say its name out loud: one, two or three. Then look at a picture. Touch each object with your finger, only once, and count. Did you say the same number as the one written? Then it’s the right picture! If not, try the next picture. The 2 looks like a swan. The 3 has two round tummies.
