About this game

Choose the picture that has as many objects as the number 4 or the number 5.

Represent the numbers 4 and 5: read the number, find the collection

4 and 5 are written numbers that children see everywhere: on doors, clocks, books. Representing the numbers 4 and 5 means linking these signs to a real quantity. This link is not obvious. Indeed, a child may name the number 5 without being able to show five objects.

Each round has five questions, read aloud. The child looks at a number, then chooses the picture that has as many objects. To find it, they first say the name of the number. Then they count the objects in each picture, touching them with their finger. If the answer is partly right, they keep some points.

At home, write 4 and 5 on two sheets of paper. Then put the right number of erasers or blocks next to each sheet. For example, mix up the piles and ask your child to put them back. Also show them how to represent the numbers 4 and 5 with their fingers: four without the thumb, five with the whole hand.

This game suits preschoolers aged 4 to 6. It is free online, on a computer, tablet or phone.

Tip for linking 4 and 5 to their objects

First, look at the number and say its name: four or five. Next, choose a picture. Touch each object with your finger, only once, and count out loud. Do you stop on the same number as the one written? Then it’s the right picture! If not, move on to the next picture. Finally, choose the right one. You can also hold up your fingers to help you.
