Take away 1 from 10 to 2: one fewer

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Count the cups in the picture, then touch the group with one less: a boy points to three cups of cocoa, beside groups of one and two cups, while a cat watches.

Take away 1 from 10 to 2: your child counts cups or hams, then chooses the group that has one fewer. Free practice for the last year of preschool.

About this game

Count cups, hamburgers, hams or bananas, then touch the group that has one fewer. For practice.

Take away 1 from 10 to 2: find the number that comes just before

Taking away 1 means finding the number that comes just before. This game is the mirror of “Add 1”. Here, the child has to go back one step in the counting rhyme. And counting backwards takes more effort than counting forwards. To take away 1 from 10 to 2, a child in the last year of preschool strengthens the countdown.

Each game has five questions. First, a voice reads the instruction. Then the child counts the cups, hamburgers, hams or bananas in the picture. Next, they choose the group that has one fewer. They practise freely, with no grade, with a progress bar.

At home, say the counting rhyme backwards, from ten to one, like a rocket launch. Then put out seven biscuits and eat one together. Ask: “How many are left?” This way, the child learns to take away 1 from 10 to 2 with real objects, before doing it in their head.

This game is for children aged 5 to 6, in the last year of preschool. It is free on computer, tablet and phone.

Tip for taking away 1: go back one number

First, count the objects in the picture. For example, you find eight bananas. Then go back one number, like when you count backwards: eight, seven! Next, look for the group that has seven bananas. Count them with your finger to check. One fewer is the number before. Finally, choose the right group.
