About this game

Learn to write numbers in digits from their number names. Read each number, find the thousands and the millions, then type the number. An interactive place value exercise to read, break down and write whole numbers.

How do you go from number names to numbers in digits?

To write a number in digits, read it slowly and find the different parts of the number.

Start by finding the ones, the thousands and the millions. Each part has its own place.

For example, “eight thousand seven hundred twenty-three” becomes 8,723.

For a bigger number, “nineteen million three hundred forty-two thousand seven hundred fifty-eight” becomes 19,342,758.

You can separate the thousands and the millions with commas to read the number more easily. Don’t use a period.

A simple method for writing a number in digits

  1. Read the number name all the way to the end.
  2. Find the words million and thousand.
  3. Write each group of three digits: millions, thousands, then ones.
  4. Check for the zeros a group may need.

For example, “five million eight thousand four” is written 5,008,004.

Tip: don’t rush! Split the number into groups of three digits in your head before you write it.
