3rd Grade 8 Times Table Worksheet: 12 Column Facts and a Doubling Trick
Eight looks like a big number to multiply by, yet every fact hides three easy doubles. This 3rd grade 8 times table worksheet gives 12 facts in columns, from 1 × 8 to 12 × 8, in a mixed order. A boy kicks a soccer ball by the title, just as on the page for the 9s. Multiplying by 8 comes right after the 2s and the 4s, because each of these tables doubles the one before. The second page is an answer key with all twelve products.
The doubling trick
To multiply by 8, double three times. For 7 × 8, start at 7, then say 14, then 28, and finally 56. Each step is a fact from the 2s, so your child already knows it.
With 12 × 8, the three doubles are 24, 48 and 96. That is also why the 8s follow the 4s: double any answer of the 4s and you land on the 8s.
At the table: ten groups minus two
Another road to the answer is ten groups minus two groups. For 9 × 8, think 9 × 10 = 90, then take away 18 to reach 72. Your child can check every answer with its ones digit, because these digits always go 8, 6, 4, 2, 0 and then start again.
Items i and j, 11 × 8 and 12 × 8, go past the usual third grade facts. Here, ten groups minus two works well: 120 – 24 = 96.
After the page: count by 8s
Counting by 8s out loud makes the table stick. Start at 8 and climb to 96 while your child taps a foot on each number. Next, use the answer key to check the column multiplication, one row at a time. Finally, cover one answer and ask for the fact behind it, then swap roles so that your child asks the questions.
