2nd Grade Months of the Year in Order Worksheet: Rewrite the Twelve Months

Ask a seven-year-old which month comes after their birthday month and you may get a long pause, then a guess. This 2nd grade months of the year in order worksheet fixes the sequence in place. The page holds a two-column table. The left column, headed wrong order, lists all twelve months mixed up: March, April, January, July, October and so on. The right column, headed correct order, has twelve empty numbered lines. Your child rewrites the months from January to December, spelling each one out. A girl reading a red book sits on the corner of the table. A second page gives the answer key.

Why the order of the months matters

The months are a number line in words. January is the first, December the twelfth, and every plan your child makes, from a birthday to a holiday, sits somewhere on that line.

Putting them in calendar order is also a sorting task. Your child must hold the whole sequence in mind and find each month in the scrambled list, so the page trains memory and careful reading at once.

Finally, writing each name helps your child spell the months, which is harder than it looks. For example, February has an r after the b that many adults skip too. Slow letters help.

At the table: January first, then the hunt

Start by asking, "Which month starts the year?" Then let your child find January in the left column and cross it out lightly once it is copied.

The middle of the year is where the order slips. June and July sound alike, and many children swap them. Instead of correcting, ask, "Which one has your summer birthday?" or "Which comes first, J-U-N or J-U-L?"

The end of the year is the other trap. September, October, November and December all end the same way, so a child may write them in the wrong order. So count them on your fingers from January: September is nine, then October, November and December close the year. Also, saying the months aloud as a chant before writing helps.

A year on the fridge

Months stick when they belong to your family. Hang a paper calendar on the fridge and let your child write each birthday in the right month. At the start of every month, ask, "What month is it now? What comes next?"

The picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle walks through the days of the week in order. After reading it, try the same game with months: name one, and your child names the next.

A set of twelve cards, one month each, makes a quick sorting game on the floor.

Once you finish the page, check it with the answer key together and praise the care: "You spelled every month. That took patience."
