3rd Grade Points, Lines, Line Segments and Rays Worksheet: 9 Pictures

Geometry has four basic words that children meet before they draw any shape. This 3rd grade points, lines, line segments and rays worksheet puts all four of them on one page. There are nine small drawings in a grid of three by three, and each one is labelled with capital letters, such as A and B. Some drawings end with arrows, some end with dots, and one of them is only two dots. Under each drawing, your child writes point, line, line segment or ray. The arrows and the dots are the only clues, so your child has to look at both ends. Page two is the answer key, and it writes the right word under every drawing.

Nine answers to check

The answers are a line for 1, a ray for 2 and a line segment for 3, and then a line for 4, a line segment for 5 and a line for 6. Item 7 is a ray, item 8 shows two points and item 9 is a ray. All nine answers in the key are right.

The file name leaves out the word "points," but the page title has it, so nothing is missing for your child. Note that US schools often teach these words in grade 4, so this page is a good stretch.

At the table: count the arrows on each ray

Teach one simple rule: count the arrows. Two arrows mean a line, because it goes on forever both ways, while one arrow means a ray, which starts at a dot and goes on forever one way. No arrow means a line segment, which stops at both dots.

Then ask your child to name each drawing with its letters, such as "line segment CD" or "ray EF." For a ray, the starting dot always comes first. This small habit makes the words feel precise, and it prepares them for later geometry.

After the page: lines and rays around you

Go outside or look out of a window together. A road that seems to go on and on can stand for a line, and a beam from a flashlight works like a ray. A pencil or the edge of a table is a line segment, because it stops at both ends. Next, ask your child to find two of each. Then they draw their finds and add the arrows and dots.
