3rd Grade Divide 3-Digit by 1-Digit Word Problems: 3 Stories
Each story on this page hides a division, and your child has to find it. This 3rd grade divide 3-digit by 1-digit word problems sheet has three short stories. First, 575 pants are shared evenly on 5 racks, and in the second story Charly spends $360 on cards that cost $4 each. In the last one, Telma takes 198 photos, the same number every day for 9 days. For each story, your child writes the facts on the lines, then writes the division and solves it with long division in the box. The answers are 115 pants, 90 cards and 22 photos. The second page is an answer key with every step of the long division.
Find the division in the story
Before any calculation, ask your child two questions. What is the total, and into how many equal parts is it shared? In the first story, the total is 575 pants and there are 5 racks, so the division is 575 ÷ 5.
In the photo story, the words "the same number every day" matter. Because Telma takes as many photos each day, 198 ÷ 9 gives the photos for one day.
Long division, one digit at a time
Long division works from the left. For 575 ÷ 5, divide 5 by 5 first, which gives 1. After that, bring down the 7, and 5 goes into 7 once with 2 left over, so you write 1 again. Bringing down the last 5 makes 25, and 25 ÷ 5 = 5, so the answer is 115.
Dividing a 3-digit number is often taught in 4th grade, so a little help here is normal. To check, multiply back: 115 × 5 = 575.
After the page: equal sharing at home
First, compare each answer with the answer key on page two, and check each one by multiplying, for example 90 × 4 = 360. Next, make up an equal sharing story with things at home, such as 120 stickers for 4 friends. Finally, let your child tell you the division before they solve it, because naming it is half the work.
