3rd Grade Like Denominator Fraction Story Problems Worksheet

When two fractions share the same denominator, the parts are the same size, so they are easy to add or take away. This 3rd grade like denominator fraction story problems worksheet puts that idea into three short word problems. First, Mercy eats part of a packet of candies, and your child works out what fraction of the packet she ate. Next, Rita mixes granulated sugar and icing sugar for her cupcakes. Last, Walters and Alice walk to school, and your child finds how much farther Walters went than his friend. Each story asks for one sum or one difference, never both. The second page is an answer key that shows every step.

Same denominator: only the top number changes

With the same denominator, the bottom number stays put and only the top numbers are added or subtracted. So Rita uses 3/4 + 1/4 = 4/4 cup of sugar. Since four quarters make a whole, that is 1 cup in all. Likewise, Walters walks 8/9 - 3/9 = 5/9 of a mile more than Alice.

Ask your child to say the denominator out loud before computing, because hearing it once more reminds them that it stays the same in the answer.

Simplify the answer at the end

In the first story, Mercy had 7/8 of a packet and 3/8 is left, so she ate 7/8 - 3/8 = 4/8. However, 4/8 is the same amount as 1/2, so the key shows how to simplify it. To see why, draw a bar cut into eight equal parts and shade four of them: exactly half of the bar is shaded.

Then check together that every answer names its unit: a packet, a cup or a mile.

After the page: fractions in the kitchen

To begin, compare the three answers with the answer key on page two. Next, cut a sandwich or a pizza into equal parts and eat some of them. Then ask how many parts are left, written as a fraction. Finally, let your child invent a short story problem for you to solve.
