3rd Grade Reading a Data Table Worksheet: 2 Tables

A table puts numbers in rows and columns so they are quick to find. This 3rd grade reading a data table worksheet helps your child read one and use what it says. In the first table, Larry counts what he finds while cleaning his father’s office: pens, paper clips, markers, calculators and old books. In the second data table, Mercy lists the groceries she bought, in kilograms: tomatoes, onions, apples, flour, steak and chicken. Then come five short word problems. Your child finds the right numbers in the table, and then adds or subtracts them. The second page is an answer key that shows every step.

First find the number, then compute

Each question names what to look for. For "how many more pens than markers", your child finds the Pens column (10) and the Markers column (3), and then subtracts: 10 - 3 = 7. For a total, every number in the row is added: 10 + 20 + 3 + 1 + 25 = 59 items.

Ask your child to point at each number before writing it. This simple habit stops most reading mistakes.

Kilograms, not items

The grocery table counts kilograms, so every answer in part 2 ends with kilograms too. Tomatoes and flour weigh 15 + 20 = 35 kilograms. The whole row comes to 58 kilograms. In question c, Mercy adds 4 kilograms of chicken and 6 kilograms of carrots, so 58 + 4 + 6 = 68 kilograms.

However, the unit is easy to forget. So check together that the answer names the same unit as the table.

After the page: tables at home

To begin, compare the five answers with the answer key on page two. Next, make a small table of your own, such as the toys in a box or the fruit in the kitchen. Then ask two questions about it: one with "how many more" and one with "in all". Finally, let your child invent a question for you to solve.
