3rd Grade Count Coins and Bills Worksheet: 8 Money Totals
How much money is in each set? This 3rd grade count coins and bills worksheet shows eight small piles of money. Each pile mixes $1 and $5 bills with pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, and a note at the top gives the value of each coin. Your child adds the bills, then the coins, and writes the total in dollars and cents. Page two is the answer key, which explains the first two sets step by step and gives the other totals in boxes. So this page is a calm review of counting money before harder word problems.
The eight totals, checked coin by coin
We counted every bill and every coin on page one. The totals are $6.25, $0.26, $13.02, $6.15, $16.00, $12.00, $2.25 and $11.05.
We fixed the printed key before we shared it. The original key counted a nickel as $0.50 instead of $0.05, so four totals were wrong (sets b, d, g and h). It also spelled "quarter" without its t. Now every coin has the right value, and every amount uses two decimal places, like $6.00 and $16.00.
At the table: bills first, then coins
First, ask your child to point at each bill and say its value. Next, they add the bills: two $5 bills and one $1 bill make $11.00. Then they count the coins, from the largest to the smallest, for example a quarter, a dime and a nickel make 40 cents. Finally, they add the two parts and write one total with a dollar sign.
A word on the level. Coins and bills are usually taught in grade 2, so this page is a review in grade 3. However, the decimal point is new for many children. If it slows your child down, count the coins in cents first: 26 cents is $0.26.
After the page: a coin jar at home
Empty a coin jar on the table, and add one or two paper bills. Your child makes a small pile and counts it out loud. Then you check it together, coin by coin, and you talk about any mistake calmly, because errors are part of learning. After that, give a target, such as $2.25, and ask your child to build it in two different ways. This game makes the value of each coin stick.
