3rd Grade 1 Times Table Worksheet: 18 Column Facts and the Identity Rule
Multiplying by 1 is the easiest table, and it carries a big idea. This 3rd grade 1 times table worksheet gives 18 facts in columns. The numbers go from 0 to 91, so they have one or two digits. A boy kicks a soccer ball by the title, just as on the pages for the 8s and the 9s. The note at the top states the rule: any number multiplied by 1 is that number, and 0 is no exception. The second page is an answer key with all eighteen products.
The identity property
Mathematicians call this rule the identity property of multiplication. One group of 6 is just 6, so 6 × 1 = 6. The number keeps its identity, as if it looked in a mirror.
Item b, 0 × 1, often surprises children. Zero groups of one, or one group of zero, still make 0, so the rule works for every number.
At the table: copy the top number
For each item, your child writes the top number again under the line. With two-digit numbers such as 37 or 91, the ones go under the ones and the tens under the tens. In this way, careful copying prepares column multiplication with bigger factors.
Next, ask your child to read each fact out loud, for example: eighty-three times one is eighty-three. Saying the rule often makes it automatic.
After the page: one bag at a time
Turn the rule into a game at home. Hand your child one bag with 7 apples and ask how many apples there are in all. Then try one bag with no apples at all. Finally, check the page with the answer key, and let your child invent a fact for you to solve.
