2nd Grade Differences Within 10 Worksheet: Tick the Ways

Ask a seven-year-old how to make 2 and you will probably hear 1 + 1. Asking for a subtraction instead surprises them, and the surprise is useful. This 2nd grade differences within 10 worksheet lists eight target numbers: 2, 3, 0, 8, 7, 4, 6 and 9. Next to each one, four choices of subtraction within 10 wait beside a box. Your child works out each subtraction and ticks every one that lands on the target. Most rows have two right answers and some have three, so your child has to test them all. On the solution page, the first row is worked out with circles crossed out. A second page gives the answer key.

Why one number has many subtractions

A number is not one fact but a family of facts. The number 2 is 4 - 2, but also 7 - 5 and 8 - 6. Seeing those links builds flexible number sense, the kind that lets a child check an answer by another route. Teachers call this exploring ways to make a number.

The page pushes that idea by allowing more than one answer. Your child cannot stop at the first tick, because every option has to be tested. That habit of checking all choices matters well beyond math.

The row for zero is especially rich. It shows 9 - 9, 2 - 2 and even 0 - 0 next to 4 - 3. So your child discovers a rule rather than memorizing it: any number minus itself gives nothing. Small rule, big idea.

At the table: the zero row and the 8 row

Start with row a. Ask your child to hold up seven fingers and fold down five. Two fingers stay up, so 7 - 5 gets a tick.

The zero row surprises many children. Some skip 0 - 0 because it looks like a trick. Ask, "If you have nothing and take nothing, what do you have?"

The 8 row hides a different trap. 8 - 8 sits there with an 8 in it, and a hurried child ticks it because the number looks right. Point to it and ask what eight take away eight gives. Also watch 7 - 2 in the same row: it is close, but not equal. Finally, ask your child to read each ticked line aloud, slowly and clearly.

Grapes, stairs and a Go Fish twist

Subtraction facts fit anywhere you have small things to take away. At snack time, put eight grapes on a plate, eat a few, and ask how many you ate if four remain. On the stairs, start at step ten and walk down three.

Also, Go Fish can become a subtraction game. Remove the face cards, then ask for a pair of cards whose difference is a chosen number, like 2: a 7 and a 5 count as a match. A minus zero card pair, like 6 and 6, can earn a bonus for zero.

Once you finish the page, check it with the answer key together. Praise the checking: "You tested every box, not just the first one."
