3rd Grade 4-Digit Addition Sentences Worksheet: Find the Missing Number

4,821 + ? = 10,920. How do you find the missing part? This 3rd grade 4-digit addition sentences worksheet starts with a worked example, then gives eight column problems. In some, the sum is missing and your child simply adds. In others, a missing addend hides in the problem, and the trick is to subtract. Numbers go up to four digits, and a few sums reach five. A second page gives the answer key.

Missing part? Subtract

Addition and subtraction undo each other. If 12 + ? = 6,591, then ? = 6,591 − 12, which is 6,579.

The example on the page shows this with 10,920 − 4,821 = 6,099.

Five-digit sums such as 16,047 are fourth grade work, so these rows are a stretch. The method stays the same.

At the table: first ask what is missing

Before any calculation, ask, "Is the sum missing, or one of the numbers?" In b, e, f and i, the sum is missing, so your child adds. In c, d, g and h, a number is missing, so they subtract.

Watch i: 2 + 8,761. The small 2 goes under the ones, and the sum is 8,763.

To check a missing addend, add it back: 9,346 + 6,701 should give 16,047.

Missing numbers around the house

Ask real questions: "We need 1,000 steps today and have walked 640. How many are left?" Your child can write it as an addition with a blank, then solve it.

Celebrate the check, not only the answer: "You added it back to be sure."
