3rd Grade Division Rule Charts Worksheet: Divide by 3, 5, 7, 9 and 12
A rule table turns one division into a whole column of practice. This 3rd grade division rule charts worksheet has five tables, labeled a to e. Each one gives a rule, such as "divide by 7", a column of inputs, a "Show working" column and an empty output column. Your child divides every input by the rule and writes the result. Table a is solved on the right of page one, so it works as a worked example. A cheerful pirate waves at the top, and a palm tree hides a treasure chest at the bottom. Page two fills in all 26 outputs in pink.
Five rules, two of them big
The rules are divide by 7, 5, 12, 9 and 3. Most inputs stay within the division facts that third graders learn, like 49 ÷ 7 = 7 or 27 ÷ 3 = 9. However, two tables go further. In table c, every input is divided by 12, so 72 ÷ 12 = 6 and 24 ÷ 12 = 2. In table d, the first input is 108, and 108 ÷ 9 = 12.
In table b, two outputs pass 10: 65 ÷ 5 = 13 and 75 ÷ 5 = 15. Counting on by fives from 50 ÷ 5 = 10 helps here. Table e also has a sixth row, 3 ÷ 3 = 1, which is an easy point.
At the table: cover the solved copy
Table a appears twice on page one, once empty on the left and once solved on the right. So fold the page or cover the right side, and let your child try table a first. Then uncover the model and compare each output, so that your child can see exactly where a slip came from.
In the "Show working" column, a short line such as 42 ÷ 7 is enough. If a fact is slow to come, your child can multiply instead: 7 × 6 = 42, so the output is 6. Each input and output table writes "Input" with a capital letter but "output" in lowercase, which is only a small slip.
After the page: the rule machine
Pretend to be a machine with a secret rule, such as divide by 4. Your child says a number, like 20, and you answer 5. After three turns, your child guesses the rule. Then swap roles. Finally, check all five tables against the answer key on page two.
