3rd Grade Equal Groups Worksheet: Count the Groups and the Items in Each
Before 5 × 8 means anything, a child must see 5 groups of 8. This 3rd grade equal groups worksheet builds that picture. Four models show dots, triangles, squares and circles in equal groups. For each one, your child fills a sentence: the number of groups, then the number in each group. The answer key on page two walks through the first model step by step.
Groups first, then items
The order matters. In model 2, there are 6 circles, so 6 groups. Each circle holds 5 triangles.
A common mix-up is to swap the two numbers and write 5 groups of 6. Point to each circle and count it once before looking inside.
The squares in model 3 sit in rows of 3, 3 and 2. Count all 8, not just the top row.
At the table: say it as a multiplication
After each sentence, ask: "How would you write that with a times sign?" 3 groups of 4 dots becomes 3 × 4.
Then use skip counting to find the total: 4, 8, 12. That is repeated addition, 4 + 4 + 4, and the picture turns into a product.
Model 4 is small on purpose. 2 groups of 4 circles make 2 × 4 = 8.
Equal groups at home
Egg boxes, muffin trays and socks all come in equal groups. Ask: "How many pairs? How many socks in each?"
If the groups are not equal, it is not multiplication yet. That is a good question to ask too.
