3rd Grade Fractions of an Hour Worksheet: Half Hours and Quarters
An hour can be cut into two halves or four quarters, just like a pizza. This 3rd grade fractions of an hour worksheet has four items, numbered 1 to 4, on grid paper. A blue circle at the top gives the chart: 15 minutes is a quarter hour, 30 minutes is a half hour and 60 minutes is 1 hour. In item 1, your child changes 60 minutes into hours. Item 2 asks which part of an hour makes 2 quarters, and item 3 turns 4 half hours into hours. Item 4 changes 5 quarter hours into hours and minutes, while a yellow school bus waits at the bottom. Page two works out each step in pink.
Four answers, step by step
The answers are 1 hour, half an hour, 2 hours and 1 hour 15 minutes. In item 2, the key adds 15 + 15 = 30 minutes, and since 30 minutes is a half hour, 2 quarters make half an hour. Item 3 adds four groups of 30 minutes, which gives 120 minutes, or 2 hours.
In item 4, five quarters make 75 minutes. The key splits them into 60 + 15, so the answer is 1 hour and 15 minutes. All the answers are right, and each step in the key is a worked example that your child can follow.
At the table: draw the clock
Give your child a paper circle as a clock face. Then they fold it in half and in half again to see the four quarters. Each quarter is 15 minutes, so they can count by fifteens around the clock: 15, 30, 45, 60. This picture helps more than the chart, because your child sees why two quarters make a half.
The title says "fraction of hours", but "fractions of an hour" is right. Item 2 writes "2 quarter of an hour" instead of "2 quarters", and the key says "convert 60 minutes to hour" for "to hours".
After the page: a timer in the kitchen
Set a kitchen timer for 15 minutes while your child reads or plays. When it rings, ask how many more quarters make an hour. Next, try 30 minutes and ask which fraction of an hour that is. In the end, check the four items with the answer key on page two.
