3rd Grade Multiply by 4 Worksheet: 18 Facts to Solve by Doubling Twice

Four is two twos. Once children see that, the 4 times table stops feeling new. This 3rd grade multiply by 4 worksheet gives 18 facts written in columns, from 0 × 4 up to 33 × 4. A girl with a backpack waits at the top corner of the grid. Most facts stay inside the usual times table, and a few larger ones ask for a little more thinking. A second page holds the answer key.

Double it twice

Multiplying by 4 is the same as doubling, then doubling again. Double it twice: for 6 × 4, double 6 is 12, and double 12 is 24.

The trick shines on item p: 24 doubled is 48, and 48 doubled is 96. Children who freeze at 24 × 4 can usually do two doubles.

At the table: the big ones

Items n and q, 33 × 4 and 31 × 4, give answers above 100 (132 and 124). That goes past the third grade fluency goal, so treat them as a stretch.

Your child can split them: 30 × 4 is 120, then add 1 × 4 or 3 × 4. The fact 1 × 4 shows up twice, in items i and m, which makes a nice easy pause.

After the page: count the legs

Count legs: four on a dog, four on a chair, four on a table. How many legs stand under 5 chairs? Let your child say the double first, then the double again.

Open the answer key on page two only once the whole page is done. Column multiplication grows faster when your child finds their own mistakes.
