3rd Grade Relating Multiplication and Division Worksheet: Fact Pairs

Multiplication and division are two ways to read the same picture. This 3rd grade relating multiplication and division worksheet makes that link plain. It shows three equal groups models: 6 orange circles in 2 groups, 12 blue squares in 6 groups and 30 yellow keys in 5 boxes. For each model, your child writes a multiplication sentence and a division sentence. Both use the same three numbers, the start of a fact family. Page two works out the first model step by step and gives the answers for the other two.

One picture, two sentences

Groups times the number in each group gives the total, so item a reads 2 × 3 = 6. Read the other way, the total shared into the groups gives the size of one group. So 6 ÷ 2 = 3.

Item b gives 6 × 2 = 12 and 12 ÷ 6 = 2. Item c gives 5 × 6 = 30 and 30 ÷ 5 = 6. In every pair, the biggest number comes last in the multiplication sentence and first in the division sentence.

At the table: signs and units

Show your child the × sign for times and the ÷ sign for division, and ask for both in their own work. Writing the units, such as circles or keys, after each number keeps the meaning clear.

The answer key gives one division for each model, but a second one is just as true. For the keys, 30 ÷ 6 = 5 tells how many boxes hold 6 keys each. Finding that second division completes the fact family and shows a real grasp of how the two operations are linked.

After the page: build the whole family

Lay out 4 rows of 3 coins on the table. Your child writes all four facts of the family: 4 × 3 = 12, 3 × 4 = 12, 12 ÷ 4 = 3 and 12 ÷ 3 = 4. Then check the page against the answer key on page two.
