3rd Grade Divide by 1 Worksheet: 20 Facts and the Rule of One
Dividing by 1 is the gentlest step into division facts, because the answer is already written on the page before your child starts. This 3rd grade divide by 1 worksheet gives 20 facts in two columns, from a to t. The numbers go from 1 to 65, so they have one or two digits. A note at the top states the division rule: any number divided by 1 is that number. In the corner, a boy kicks a soccer ball, just as on the pages for the 1s, the 8s and the 9s. The second page is an answer key with all twenty quotients.
One plate for everything
Dividing means sharing into equal groups. When there is only one group, that group gets everything. So if you share 7 cookies onto just 1 plate, all 7 cookies stay on that one plate, and 7 ÷ 1 = 7.
Item g, 1 ÷ 1, often makes children pause. One cookie on one plate is still one cookie, so the answer is 1.
At the table: say it, then write it
For each fact, your child reads the number before the sign and writes it after the equal sign. Then ask for the matching multiplication: 24 ÷ 1 = 24 because 1 × 24 = 24. In this way, every division fact links back to a times table.
Next, time a short round of mental math. Say a fact out loud, such as forty-four divided by one, and wait for the answer.
After the page: check and invent
First, check the page with the answer key together. After that, swap roles: your child invents five facts for you, and you answer some of them wrong on purpose. Finally, let your child find your mistakes and explain the rule in their own words.
