3rd Grade Expressions for Arrays Worksheet: Write Each Product

An array shows equal groups in rows and columns, so a multiplication can be read straight from the picture. This 3rd grade expressions for arrays worksheet has five arrays of cups, hearts, balls, dots and squares. For each one, your child counts the columns and the number in each column. Then they write the multiplication expressions on the lines and find each product. The first array is worked out as an example, where 3 columns of 5 cups give 3 × 5 = 15 cups. The answers go up to 60, from 5 × 4 = 20 hearts to 10 × 6 = 60 dots. The second page is an answer key with every expression and product.

Columns first, then rows

The example on the page reads the array by columns. There are 3 columns, and each column holds 5 cups, so the expression is 3 × 5. In the same way, the 5 columns of 4 hearts in item 2 give 5 × 4 = 20.

In item 5, the answer key writes 5 × 8 for 5 rows of 8 squares. Your child may write 8 × 5 instead, and that is right too. Both orders give 40, which is the commutative property.

Counting a big array

Item 4 has 60 dots, so counting them one by one is slow and easy to get wrong. Instead, count the dots in one row first, and you find 10. Next, count the rows, and you find 6. So the expression is 10 × 6, and counting by tens gives 60.

For item 3, the balls form a square of 6 rows and 6 columns, so 6 × 6 = 36.

After the page: arrays at home

First, check each expression with the answer key on page two. Next, look for arrays around the house, such as an egg box with 2 rows of 6. Then ask your child to say the expression out loud before the product: 2 × 6 = 12. Finally, let your child lay out 24 buttons in equal rows and name the expression that matches.
