3rd Grade Dividing Big Numbers by 12 Worksheet: Up to 144
Twelve is the number of eggs in a box and of months in a year. This 3rd grade dividing big numbers by 12 worksheet uses it as a divisor in six problems. The numbers to share are 144, 132, 72, 36, 120 and 84, and each one is a division with no remainder, with answers from 3 to 12. A cheerful purple dinosaur sits at the bottom of the page. Page two shows every bracket in full, and this time it also writes each answer on the line next to the problem.
A two-digit divisor
The title spells "twelve" in words, but the problems use the number 12. Using the long division method with a two-digit number is new for most children. In 144 ÷ 12, they first ask how many twelves fit in 14. One fits, with 2 left over.
Then they bring down the 4 to make 24, and 24 ÷ 12 = 2, so the quotient is 12. Item e, 120 ÷ 12, follows the same path, but the key writes the last step as "00", where one 0 would do. A two-digit divisor is usually taught in fifth grade, so this page is a real stretch.
At the table: split the twelve
Dividing by 12 is the same as dividing by 2 and then by 6. Your child can test this on 72: half of 72 is 36, and 36 ÷ 6 = 6. Another path is to divide by 3 first, then by 4.
Knowing the 12 times table helps too, because 12 × 7 = 84 gives item f at once. Item d, 36 ÷ 12 = 3, is a good warm-up, so start there. Then move on to the two long items, a and b.
After the page: eggs by the dozen
Draw six egg boxes on a sheet of paper, then ask your child how many boxes 72 eggs would fill, and how many 84 eggs would fill. Counting by twelves gives 6 and 7, matching items c and f. To finish, check each quotient against the answer key on page two.
