3rd Grade Dividing by 9 Without Remainders Worksheet: 6 Problems

Nines can look big and scary, yet they hide a friendly pattern. This 3rd grade dividing by 9 without remainders worksheet gives six problems, labeled a to f. The numbers to share are 81, 108, 36, 54, 99 and 72. Each one is a division with no remainder, because every number is a multiple of 9. Children write their work in the grid space below each problem, while a smiling grey seal waves from the bottom of the page. Page two then fills in every long division bracket and writes the result on a "So, ..." line.

Four short items, two longer ones

Four problems come straight from the 9 times table: 81 ÷ 9 = 9, 36 ÷ 9 = 4, 54 ÷ 9 = 6 and 72 ÷ 9 = 8. Items b and e need the bring down step of the long division method. In 108 ÷ 9, nine goes into 10 once, with 1 left over.

That 1 joins the 8 to make 18, and 18 ÷ 9 = 2, so the quotient is 12. Item e works the same way and gives 11, although the key writes the middle line as "09". Long division belongs to fourth grade, and 108 goes past 100, so treat both items as a stretch.

At the table: the digit sum test

Every multiple of 9 hides a clue: its digits add up to 9. For instance, 8 + 1 = 9 for 81, and 1 + 0 + 8 = 9 for 108. Your child can therefore check each number before dividing, which builds confidence.

After each answer, ask your child to multiply back. If 72 ÷ 9 = 8, then 8 × 9 must give 72 again. Note that the answer lines next to each problem stay empty on page two. Instead, the results appear only in the brackets and on the "So, ..." lines.

After the page: teams of nine

A baseball team has 9 players, so ask how many teams 36 children can form, and then how many 54 children can form. Your child divides and finds 4 and 6, just like items c and d. Finally, compare all six answers with the answer key on page two.
