3rd Grade Division Models Worksheet: Describe Equal Groups

Division starts with a simple picture: a total split into equal groups. This 3rd grade division models worksheet gives children three of these pictures to describe in words. Item a shows 8 blue squares in 2 circles. Item b shows 24 muffins in 4 circles, and item c shows 24 ice creams in 3 boxes. For each one, your child finds three numbers: the total, the number of groups and how many sit in each group. These three numbers are the start of every division. Page two gives a worked example and the answer key.

Three numbers in every picture

Item a has a sentence to fill in: the model has 8 squares divided into 2 equal groups with 4 squares in each group. Items b and c show only the pictures. So your child writes the same kind of sentence on the grid below each one.

The worked example on page two counts in a clear order: first the groups, then the whole total, then the number in one group. Keeping that order helps children see that 24 split into 4 groups gives 6 in each, which is the meaning of division.

At the table: count one group

Counting all 24 muffins one by one is slow and easy to get wrong. Show your child how to count the circles first, then the muffins in just one circle. Since the groups are equal, 4 groups of 6 make 24, and the sentence is ready.

The same picture tells a multiplication story too. Here 4 × 6 = 24, and 24 split into 4 groups is 6. This link between the two operations comes back all through third grade, and it makes later division facts much easier to recall.

After the page: share real objects

Take 12 spoons or 12 crayons and share them into 3 equal piles. Your child says the sentence aloud: 12 crayons divided into 3 equal groups with 4 in each group. Try 2 piles and then 4 piles, and check the page with the answer key on page two.
