3rd Grade Math Vocabulary for Operations Worksheet: Sum, Factor and More

Every number in a calculation has a name, and this page asks for those names. This 3rd grade math vocabulary for operations worksheet has six number sentences, labeled a to f. There is one for each operation, plus an extra addition and multiplication. In each sentence, the page underlines one or two numbers, and below it, three or four boxes offer names such as sum, addend, divisor or product. Your child checks the box that names the underlined numbers. A white cat with a rainbow unicorn horn sits at the top, while page two shows every correct box with a pink tick.

One name for each job

The answers follow the job of each number. In a, 70 is the sum of 67 + 3, and in d, 18 is an addend while 33 is the sum. In b, 24 ÷ 8 = 3 has a dividend and a divisor. Then in e, 100 × 10 = 1,000 joins two factors, while in f, 364 is the product of 52 × 7.

Item c is the hardest, because in 205 − 70 = 135, the first number is the minuend and the answer is the difference. These words are less common, so explain them before your child starts. Also note that 52 × 7 multiplies a 2-digit number, which most schools teach in fourth grade.

At the table: say the job out loud

Before your child checks a box, ask them to say what each underlined number does: "70 is the answer of an addition." Then they find the matching word. So a wrong box shows a gap in the math vocabulary rather than in the calculation.

The options have a few slips worth naming. In b, "dividend quotient" is missing an "and". In f, "divident" should read "dividend". In c, there is a double space between two words. These slips do not change the right answer, but they can confuse a careful reader.

After the page: the name game

Write an equation such as 6 × 4 = 24 and point to one number. Your child gives its name, here factor or product. Next, swap roles, so that your child points and you name the number. As a result, each word gets used again in a new setting. Finally, check the six answers with the answer key on page two.
